These are pictures of the Digital Flash Lock that I built for my Dish receiver to prevent it from getting firmware updates. It works by providing +5 volts of power to the leg of the chip that controls read and write. By holding it at 5 volts we are effectively preventing an update to the Flash chip. The lock was built with a jumper so you could receive updates if chose to.
